African Richest Woman wants YABATECH to become a University
The Richest woman in Africa according to Forbes, Dr Folorunsho Alakija has declared Yaba College of Technology is long overdue to become a university.
While addressing the polytechnic management at her Victoria island office, Mrs Alakija said Yabatech has been in existence for a very long time and it is the premier tertiary institution in the country.
It is worthy to note that YABATECH is the first tertiary institution in Nigeria. It was established in 1947.
Mrs Alakija also urged the Polytechnic management to keep demanding that the institution status be changed in the nearest future.
The College Rector, Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe in his opening speech explained that the visit to Mrs Alakija’s office was to appreciate her numerous kind gestures towards the school.
He further said: “We are planning to inaugurate Board of Fellows made up of distinguished Nigerians who are recipients of the College Fellowship award that will be partners in progress; we will tell them our needs and the areas they can be of help to us individually and collectively. An endowment fund will be setup to take care of development projects, especially the Epe campus which is begging for infrastructural development”.
Mrs Alakija is one of the biggest individual donor to the college. Her latest donation to the school was a Skills Acquisition Centre which she has promised to equip.
